Gold thread made up of round or pear-shaped links, whose morphology allows the coupling to be hidden more easily. The two ends of the thread are joined by a gold ring. After the thread is at the desired thickness, the links are cut, engaging each other manually, an operation carried out by women, called “engadeiras”, who work at home in the Gondomar region. In addition to its use as ornamentation of the human figure, it was attributed amuletic characteristics and was part of Minho songbooks and prayers18. It functioned as devotional gold used in religious events and, in the 19th century, in processions, the saints on the altars were adorned with cords from head to toe19, a procedure that dates back to the 18th century and continued through the 20th century, reaching the 21st century, in some cases. northern locations. The cord was also used to decorate the crosses of the Easter Compass. It was also used as an ornamental element to enhance farming houses and enrich the decorations of festive arches erected in these houses at the time of a daughter's wedding, both in Minho21 and Douro Litoral22, reinforcing the character of wealth associated with this thread among the rural populations. Still within this sense of praising its owner, occasionally, in situations of great ostentation, gold cords were placed on the yoke of a team of oxen used in a parade, in a demonstration of the abundance of the farmhouse and the extreme ornamental importance attributed to the part. Until the middle of the 20th century, the cord was a staple in the ornamentation of the female population throughout the North, also confirming economic status. In the second half of this century, within these parameters, the intensity of its use changed. However, in ethnographic processions in Minho it continues to be a favorite piece.
